Avery Dennison Launches Important New Initiatives To Expand Its Presence In Japan

Actions Include First General Manager and Distribution Center in Japan

Tokyo, - October 9, 2008 - Avery Dennison Corporation (NYSE: AVY), a global leader in leader in pressure-sensitive labeling materials, retail tag, ticketing and branding systems, and office products, announced today several new initiatives, including the opening of its first distribution center in Japan, that will enable it to better serve its Japanese customers and expand its business in Japan.

Speaking at the Label Forum Japan, Dean A. Scarborough, president and chief executive officer, said the new actions include:

  • The appointment of Gary LePon, as president and general manager of Japan. A former executive for AB SKF in Yokohama, LePon has extensive experience in Japan and will oversee the Company's expansion efforts and investment in the country and spearhead the development of new partnerships and strategic alliances.
  • The opening of new distribution centers that will enable Avery Dennison to distribute products from its businesses quickly and efficiently to Japanese customers. The first distribution center will be located in Chiba and use the Chiba port for distribution.
  • The establishment of an Avery Dennison Japan headquarters office in Tokyo to develop other investments and new strategic alliances, as well as manage sales across all divisions. The new headquarters office will include sales and marketing people from each of the Company's business groups.

"With so many manufacturing facilities in nearby countries, we believe now is the time for us to significantly increase our investment and presence in Japan," Scarborough said. "Our strategy and investment in Japan will enable us to serve several important constituencies in one of the most important and vital economies in the world and help them grow not only in Japan, but in other global markets."

  • Japanese-based companies that have operations all over the world, such as Toyota and Sapporo. Avery Dennison's close proximity to their offices will enable it to work closer with them to develop worldwide solutions that can be applied in all of their facilities.
  • Global customers of Avery Dennison, such as Procter & Gamble and Unilever, who want access in Japan to the Company's products they use elsewhere in the world. Avery Dennison has worked closely with these customers to develop packaging solutions that help market and differentiate their products, but these solutions have been limited in Japan to the products they import.
  • Japanese-based companies that have significant Asian market share or special technologies, but lacking a market presence outside of Asia. Avery Dennison intends to form partnerships and strategic alliances with these enterprises that will allow them to access the Company's global resources and infrastructure to grow their businesses in Asia and expand into new markets.
